Horns
of Power, Book Review from
"Cauldron Magazine"
When
it comes to images of divinity the Wiccan and neo-pagan
scene is dominated by the Goddess. It is therefore refreshing
to have a book that is devoted exclusively to the male divine
principle as the Horned God in his animal forms as stag,
bull, ram and goat. All too often in neo-pagan circles the
God gets short shrift and in some pagan social environments
he is even a taboo subject. Somebody I know was ejected
from a Pagan Federation pub moot for daring to mention him.
This is a collection of short pieces by twenty-three modern
pagans writing about the myths, folklore and history of
Old Hornie. There are also accounts drawn from personal
experience of the God. The horned deities covered include
Cernunnos, Pan, Herne, Puck (Robin Goodfellow), Gwyn ap
Nudd, Amen-Ra etc. It would have been nice to though to
have had a contribution from someone in the Traditional
Craft discussing the Horned One from a different perspective,
but hey you cant have everything. As it is this anthology
is a brave attempt by those good people at Avalonia to bring
Himself back into neo-pagan conciousness and for that reason
it can be applauded. The book also has some good illustrations
and a stunning cover by Marc Potts. Recommended.
